Supplier and value chain incompatibility is a barrier, because even if a company adopts digital sustainability tools, their suppliers may not. This breaks the chain of transparency, traceability, and collaborative impact—especially in global supply chains.

The first and most important is a regulatory trend.  EU rules are turning sustainability data into a market-access requirement, thus the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) is now law and rolling out a 2025–2030 plan. Also Digital Product Passports (DPPs) are coming and CSRD expands audited sustainability reporting. EU-wide EPR for textiles is progressing; and microplastics restrictions are in force (with France’s microfiber-filter rule for new washers from 2025). 

3D design, AI, blockchain, AR/VR, and digital product passports are at the center of fashion’s transformation. These technologies not only improve efficiency and creativity but also support sustainability and transparency, which are becoming critical competitive factors 

The most impact is felt in design, meaning in speed and creativity, in production, meaning efficiency and sustainability and finally customer engagement, meaning personalization and convenience. Overall, end-to-end integration across the whole chain is what creates real competitive advantage. 

Sustainability in fashion companies is no longer limited to eco-materials. Other factors, such as design, manufacturing, logistics, retail, and circular recovery at the end of life, are critical for the implementation of sustainability strategy that fashion companies use.

The essential knowledge for someone working on this field, is the knowledge of how circular economy works – design for reuse, repair, recycling, and reduced waste, sustainable materials– choose low-impact, organic, recycled, or innovative fibers, resource efficienct– minimize water, energy, and chemical use, ethical labor – ensure fair wages, safe conditions, and respect for workers’ rights, tranparency– trace and disclose supply chains to build accountability, responsible business models– resale, rental, repair, upcycling, and slow fashion. Also compliance and standards– follow sustainability policies, eco-labels, and certifications and consumer engagement– avoid greenwashing; promote mindful consumption.

 This role bridges sustainability and digital innovation by collaborating across R&D, IT, operations, marketing, and finance, while engaging with regulators, tech providers, research partners, clients, and industry alliances to drive sustainable, data-driven solutions.
